About

Human Edge Studios

Applied learning for real-world AI questions.

Human Edge Studios are interdisciplinary learning environments where students, professionals, educators, and practitioners work together on real-world challenges involving AI, data, ethics, governance, workforce change, and human impact.

Participants don't simply learn about AI. They work with it in context—bringing different disciplines, perspectives, and forms of expertise to questions without predetermined answers.

Learning Through Practice

AI readiness develops through experience.

Human Edge Studios create opportunities for participants to work with real-world questions, data, technologies, and perspectives while developing the judgment needed to use AI responsibly.

The emphasis is not simply on what participants build or produce. It is also on how they frame the problem, question assumptions, evaluate information, navigate tradeoffs, collaborate across disciplines, and communicate the reasoning behind their decisions.

Technical capability matters. So do context, judgment, ethical reasoning, communication, and an understanding of the people and institutions affected by the work.

"I loved having the opportunity to work with students from different backgrounds and different schools. WPI is primarily an engineering school, so collaborating with liberal arts students provided a valuable perspective when creating social policies. The event also helped improve my presentation skills and communication skills, since I was working with and sharing results to people I had never met before. Overall, the event provided a great real-world experience in solving problems with AI in a team-oriented environment."

How a Human Edge Studio Works

1. Start with a real-world question
Each Studio begins with a consequential question or challenge grounded in real-world context.

2. Bring different perspectives together
Interdisciplinary teams connect technical and non-technical disciplines, requiring participants to work across different ways of thinking.

3. Work with AI, data, and expertise
Participants use relevant data, AI tools, research, and practitioner perspectives to explore the challenge in context.

4. Develop and test an approach
Teams question assumptions, analyze information, consider tradeoffs, and examine the practical and human implications of their thinking.

5. Communicate and reflect
Participants present and defend their reasoning, receive feedback, and reflect on how their thinking evolved.

Human Edge is platform-independent. Technology supports the work; it does not define the experience.

What Participants Practice

Judgment
Knowing when to use AI, when to question it, and where human judgment remains essential.

Critical Thinking
Examining information, assumptions, evidence, outputs, and uncertainty.

Ethical Reasoning
Considering impact, tradeoffs, responsibility, and who may be affected.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Working across different disciplines, expertise, methods, and perspectives.

Communication
Explaining complex ideas, decisions, limitations, and recommendations clearly.

Applied AI Capability
Using AI, data, and technology as tools for problem-solving in context.

Why Interdisciplinary Teams Matter

Many real-world AI questions are not solely technical.

A workforce challenge can involve economics, education, organizational behavior, public policy, and individual opportunity. Other challenges may bring together technology with ethics, law, trust, accessibility, or human consequences.

Human Edge Studios intentionally connect technical and non-technical disciplines so participants learn not only to contribute their own expertise, but to work effectively with people who see the problem differently.

Different Environments. A Shared Approach

Human Edge Studios can be adapted to different learning and professional environments while maintaining the same human-centered foundation.

Academic Studios

Interdisciplinary experiences connecting students, faculty, institutions, and external practitioners around real-world questions.

Public-Learning Studios

Applied experiences developed with institutions that connect science, technology, education, and broader communities.

Intern & Early-Career Studios

Experiences bringing interns and emerging professionals across organizations together around shared questions involving AI, work, and responsible application.

Across environments, the Studio model remains grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration, real-world context, responsible AI use, and learning through practice.

Previous Studios

Human Edge has brought together interdisciplinary participants from universities across New England to work on applied challenges involving AI, data, technology, and human impact.

In partnership with AIxEd and Elai, Human Edge brought together students from across disciplines to explore the opportunities and challenges of applying AI in high-stakes decision-making environments.

Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants used generative AI tools and a predictive AI model to evaluate a realistic decision scenario, assess model outputs, identify potential risks and biases, and develop recommendations for deployment, modification, or delay.

The experience challenged students to move beyond technical capability alone by considering human judgment, governance, accountability, and real-world consequences alongside model performance.

Highlights

  • Interdisciplinary student participation across multiple fields of study

  • Hands-on use of generative AI and predictive AI tools

  • Team-based evaluation of a high-stakes AI decision scenario

  • Exploration of bias, risk, governance, and human oversight

  • Collaboration with industry, academic, and AI practitioners

This Studio reflected Human Edge's core belief that responsible AI requires more than technical fluency. It requires judgment, communication, and the ability to apply technology thoughtfully in real-world contexts.

More Than a Single Experience

Human Edge Studios are designed as part of a broader model.
Challenges can be informed by academic, industry, workforce, civic, research, and technology perspectives. What emerges through the experience can also inform future Studios, Human Edge Insights, Roundtables, and continued cross-sector dialogue.
Applied experience creates new questions. Those questions can help inform what comes next.

Participate in a Human Edge Studio

Students & Emerging Talent
Work across disciplines on consequential real-world questions and build applied experience using AI responsibly.

Academic Institutions & Faculty
Engage students and faculty, contribute disciplinary expertise, and connect applied work with academic environments.

Practitioners & Experts
Bring domain expertise, mentorship, context, feedback, and perspective to participants and challenges.

Organizations & Partners

Bring Your Perspective to the Work.

The strongest response to a complex problem rarely comes from one discipline, one technology, or one point of view.

Human Edge Studios create a place to work across those boundaries—and to practice using AI with the judgment, context, and responsibility real-world decisions require.
