Work, Identity, and Opportunity in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is changing how work is performed, how skills are valued, and how people understand career pathways and opportunity.
The October Human Edge Studio will bring together students from across institutions and disciplines to explore what those changes mean in practice.
Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants will use real workforce and labor-market data to examine how AI is reshaping work, skills, and opportunity. Teams will identify meaningful patterns, consider the human and ethical implications behind the data, and develop practical ideas that could help students, workers, educators, employers, or workforce systems navigate change with greater clarity and confidence.
Participants will work alongside faculty, industry practitioners, workforce leaders, technology and data partners, and civic stakeholders throughout the day.
Who should participate?
Students across disciplines are encouraged to join, including:
computer science and data science, engineering, economics and business, sociology and psychology, communications and design, political science and public policy, education, humanities and ethics, and other fields.
Open to undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines. No prior AI or coding experience required
What participants will gain
Participants will have an opportunity to:

Selected teams will also have an opportunity to present their work at a Human Edge Roundtable at the Massachusetts State House in November.
Interested in participating as an industry, workforce, civic, or academic mentor?
Human Edge welcomes practitioners who can spend part of the day helping teams interpret data, pressure-test ideas, and connect their work to real-world context.

Human Edge Studio by SG+I — Spring 2026
Northeastern University | Boston, MA
In partnership with AIxEd and Elai, Human Edge brought together students from across disciplines to explore the opportunities and challenges of applying AI in high-stakes decision-making environments.
Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants used generative AI tools and a predictive AI model to evaluate a realistic decision scenario, assess model outputs, identify potential risks and biases, and develop recommendations for deployment, modification, or delay.
The experience challenged students to move beyond technical capability alone by considering human judgment, governance, accountability, and real-world consequences alongside model performance.
